How To Install Shelves
If you’re looking to quickly and easily add simple shelves to just about any room in your house, there’s really no need to call a handyman or contractor. With some basic tools and a Sunday afternoon, you can install them yourself and save some big bucks.
- First, run a stud finder over your drywall until you hear a “beep” or it displays a solid red line. From there, measure over 32 inches and you should find a second stud (be sure to double check with your stud finder though).
- From there, hold one of your shelf standards against the wall and mark the location of the top screw hole on the stud, then drill a ⅛ “ pilot hole.
- Next, drill a 2 ½ “ screw through the pilot hole to secure the standard. Be sure the standard is snug but not overtightened.
- Now, hold a level against the standard and adjust until it reads plum vertically. Secure the bottom screw hole with a 2 ½” screw just like the top and then fill in the remaining holes.
- Hook a shelf bracket into each standard on the same level and hold your second one against the wall on its stud. Place your level across the two brackets and, once level, mark your screw holes and proceed to secure it just like the first one.
- Slide the shelf onto the brackets and drill up through the front mounting hole of the brackets to about halfway through. Hold the shelf down while you drill in a 1 ¼ “ wood screw. Continue with remaining brackets and shelves as desired.
That’s all there is to it! In less than an hour you can expand your closet, declutter your bathroom or give much needed space to a cluttered bookshelf!
